By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Protests erupted today in different parts of Guatemala as civil society organizations and indigenous groups took to the streets to demonstrate over 17 points including the high cost of fuel and food, Prensa Libre reports.
The groups are expressing their concerns over the high cost of basic food products and fuel, against corruption, and against the arrest of human rights defenders.
In addition, they are protesting the detention of prominent journalist, Jose Rubén Zamora. Zamora was detained last week citing an investigation for money laundering.
Zamora “is one of the main critics of the government of Alejandro Giammattei, and his arrest took place five days after strong complaints against several officials and former officials for corruption in a Sunday section of the morning paper,” El Periodico said in a statement.
Transport officials in Guatemala have mobilized along with police since several main roads were blocked off by protesters.
