Serena Williams announces retirement from tennis; Blames family life

Posted: Tuesday, August 9, 2022. 6:57 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Serena Williams, the number 1 ranked single female tennis player in the world according to the World Tennis Association, announced this week that she will be, reluctantly, retiring from tennis to focus on her family life.

Williams, 41, told Vogue Magazine that she did not want to have to choose between her career and building her family, and said that she could possibly be more like football legend Tom Brady if she did not have to bear the burden of having children.

“I don’t think it’s fair,” Williams told Vogue. “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity.”

Williams said she will also use her retirement to focus on her other business endeavors such as her venture capital firm which has a key focus on investing in startup businesses
by women and people of color.

Williams, whose iconic professional career began back in 1995, won her first major singles title at the 1999 US Open. Since then she has been a dominant force in women’s tennis, ascending to the Number 1 rank, breaking several times due to injury, only to reclaim her position at the top.

Williams has been ranked singles world No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No.1 five times. Her 23 Grand Slam singles titles are the most by any player in the Open Era, and the second highest of all time, bested only by the 24 titles held by Margaret Court.

Williams has also won 14 major women’s doubles titles, all with her sister Venus, and the pair are unbeaten in Grand Slam doubles finals.
