By Breaking Belize News Staff: Councilors of the Belmopan City Council have voiced their strong objection to the recent appointment of Mrs. Pauline Soberanis-Tillett as Deputy Mayor.
The councilors issued a statement today, noting that the council posted on its official Facebook page earlier that Soberanis’s appointment was with immediate effect, but that the appointment was made in contradiction to Section 19 (2) of the Belmopan City Council Act, which states that such a decision must be made by vote of the entire council.
“Furthermore, the term of the current Deputy Mayor Daren Swasey is still in effect until September 2022. We vehemently oppose the dictatorial appointment of a new Deputy Mayor,” the councilors said.
This latest act represents another in a growing number of conflicts between Belmopan City Mayor Sheron Palacio and her councilors.
