Carmelita Gardens: The Best Eco-Friendly And Self-Sufficient Community In Belize

Posted: Wednesday, August 10, 2022. 1:38 pm CST.

By Breaking Belize News Staff: When it comes to green-minded and self-sufficient communities located within the gorgeous natural beauty of Belize, Carmelita Gardens is the best, and possibly only, name to know. This lush hideaway was created by Phil Hahn, an American land developer who anticipated a way to escape the various crises of the United States around a decade ago. After analyzing his options and picking a plot of land within Belize’s western Cayo District, Carmelita Gardens was born.

This one community consists of 100 acres adjacent to Santa Familia village and was acquired by Phil Hahn from Dan Silva, a representative for the area. Its developmental credo is to encourage a sort of interdependent living by enjoying life “Independently [but] Together;” Residents are free to do whatever they fancy, either on their own or in collaboration with others. Further, most residents can enjoy their lives without being bothered or harassed by the outside world. When Hahn came to Silva, he was advised to ensure that Santa Familia would prosper; the deal could only be okayed if Hahn ensured that Santa Familia would benefit from having a neighboring community.

The closeness between the residents of Carmelita Gardens and Santa Familia ensures regularly interactions. Carmelita Gardens creates jobs and training programs for Santa Familia’s villagers and also funds the village’s community endeavors, while Santa Familia warmly accepts the Carmelita Gardeners as an extended family; after all, the place’s name is Spanish for “Holy/Sainted Family.”

While not specifically intended as a retirement community, Carmelita Gardens is quite welcoming to retirees and whatever wishes they may have for the design of their retirement property. Hahn remarks that anyone who comes to call Carmelita Gardens their home is encouraged toward entrepreneurship or to invest in other businesses as the entire community is intended to take care of itself. While current investments have been in land and rental properties, future ventures will involve a retail association to cover agricultural, technological, and food services, as well as hotels.

The community itself is arranged much like any other town.

  • A central town square bearing multiple types of businesses.
  • Neighborhoods that radiate from the town square, that serve as branches to larger villages and estates.

While houses come in a variety of sizes and styles, all are designed with classic proportions and with an eye for a harmonious design. Every home relies upon solar power, rainwater, and green-minded wastewater mechanisms.
