International News: Facebook hands over chat messages between mom and daughter, both charged for illegal abortion

Posted: Wednesday, August 10, 2022. 3:10 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Social media giant, Facebook handed over the chats between a mom and her daughter to police in Nebraska, Yahoo reports.

According to the report, the company gave the chats to the police after they were served with a warrant as part of an investigation into an illegal abortion.

The investigation was launched in April before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Now, abortion rights experts say that as abortion becomes illegal in many states, this could be a common practice.

The 41-year-old mom reportedly acquired and gave abortion pills to her 17-year-old daughter, then helped her bury the fetus.

Both mom and daughter were charged and pled not guilty.

Facebook noted that nothing in the warrants in June mentioned abortion.

“The warrants concerned charges related to a criminal investigation and court documents indicate that police at the time were investigating the case of a stillborn baby who was burned and buried, not a decision to have an abortion,” the company said.

Deputy Director of Surveillance at the Center of Democracy and Technology, Jake Laperruque says that tech companies that store plaintext information about users who intend to have abortions are likely to continue to be served warrants as more states prosecute abortion-related crimes.
