More than 500 Belizean educators benefit from Rotary Foundation-funded literacy training

Posted: Wednesday, August 10, 2022. 8:19 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Over 500 educators from the Cayo District are benefitting from a Rotary Foundation-funded 3-day workshop being held at Sacred Heart College in San Ignacio.

The 3- day Literacy training for teachers is part of a large globally funded project to assist teachers and librarians in reading and writing teaching skills. The project was in place for several years before the COVID-19 pandemic and the research details have been added to the initial focus of Literacy.

The training is being facilitated by educators from Alberta, Canada.

The global grant, approved and funded through the Rotary Foundation, provides money for materials that the teachers make and use as resources in their classrooms.

The Rotary Club in San Ignacio has worked with this Canadian Rotarian group for the last 12 years.

Cynthia Reece of the Rotary Club in San Ignacio noted that for the last 5 years, the National Library Service has participated in literacy training for librarians across the country.

Since 2019, the project has included teachers in Toledo supported by the Rotary Club of Punta Gorda.

Research shows our children, aged 4 – 9, have lost a lot of their learned skills during the pandemic.

“To catch our young students up, research shows reading for 30 – 45 minutes a day for five months will bring them back up to grade level skills. Volunteers to read to our children are needed to support this recovery effort,” she noted.
