Persistent rains cause flooding in Belize City and beyond

Posted: Wednesday, August 10, 2022. 1:47 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Belize City and several other areas are experiencing flooding as rains persist between last night and this morning.

Flood-prone areas in the City such as Pickstock Street, King Street, and Dean Street were experiencing flooding from yesterday, while other areas such as Freetown Road, began experiencing flooding this morning.

The National Hydrological Service (NHS) issued a flood report moments ago, which states that several rivers are also experiencing flood conditions.

The NHS said that the Manatee River and Soldier Creek Bridge are flooded on the Coastal Highway. There is a flood alert for the Rio Grande at San Pedro Columbia; at the Moho River at Jordan and on the Temash River near Crique Sarco. There is also a medium risk for a potential flash flood event on the Rio Grande.

A flood watch is currently in place for the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun, Hattieville, and Nearby Tributaries, where water levels are increasing.

“Citizens in these areas are advised to exercise extreme caution,” the NHS said.

Major flooding has also been reported in Silk Grass Village, Stann Creek district, and residents have been asking for help on social media as the conditions have begun to worsen.
