By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Ministry of Agriculture delegation led by Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai will visit a coconut processing plant in Brazil on Friday.
The Agriculture delegation is the South American country on occasion of Brazil’s three-day National Coconut Fair (Fenacoco) which ends on Friday in Fortaleza.
Minister Mai said representatives of EMBRAPA, Brazil’s main agriculture research organization, have been assisting them during their visit and have arranged for them to visit a processing plant near Fortaleza on Friday.
“We have just finalized arranging a trip to one of the processing plants about an hour and a half from where we are. So, tomorrow we’ll be visiting that processing plant,” said Minister Mai.
“They do coconut water and coconut milk. One of the big ones here in Brazil. Brazilians don’t usually welcome visitors to their plants because of the technology that they have bur they made an exception to host us.”
Minister Mai said they are interested in seeing the processing equipment.
“We’re looking at the equipment for thiese products. Tomorrow we’re going to see the equipment and we’re going to see the plant that they use to process coconuts, coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut water, and coconut concentrate,” he said.
Minister Mai also said he’s finalizing the details for the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase 18,000 disease tolerant and high yielding coconut seeds from Brazil.
