By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belmopan City Councilor Pauline Soberanis, following an announcement by the Belmopan City Council that she had been appointed to the post of Deputy Mayor, said that she declined taking up the position.
In a Facebook post Soberanis said, “Pleasant night to you all, perhaps you saw the release by the City Council this afternoon introducing me as the New Deputy Mayor, however, I would just like to say that we did not have a meeting, voting or anything for me to have been elected, therefore, I declined. I continue to serve to the best of my ability. Thanks again.”
The announcement of her appointment had raised the ire of other members of the Council, who issued a statement late yesterday, stressing that the appointment went against legally mandated procedures.
“The Councilors hereby inform the residents of Belmopan that this decision was not made in accordance with the Belmopan City Council Act Section 19 (2) (e) which, through a decision of the Caucus, decided that appointments must be made by vote of the entire council,” the Councilors said.
Issues between Belmopan Mayor Sheran “Sharon” Palacio and her Councilors began arising shortly after the council took office and several of their fallouts have played out very publicly. This includes an incident back in January where it was reported that Palacio changed two locks at the Council office without informing anyone, which resulted in Deputy Mayor Guadalupe Chicas being unable to access her office.
In a letter sent to the Mayor that was later leaked to the media, the Councilors raised serious concerns with Palacio’s management style, alleging a lack of transparency and accountability, as well as blatant nepotism.
Palacio has not made any public statements regarding Soberanis’s appointment and subsequent decline.
