By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize City’s 501 Stars Academy are representing Belize in U-17 Central American Football Union’s (UNCAF) Club Championship in Managua, Nicaragua. The regional tournament runs from August 14-20.
The 501 Stars Academy team left Belize on Thursday under the guidance of coach Stanley ‘Jordan’ Reneau. They are travelling by road via Guatemala and Honduras.
The seven teams participating have been placed in two groups. 501 Stars Academy will play in the group against Nicaragua’s Real Estelí, Honduras’ AFFI Academia, and Guatemala’s Xelajú.
The other group comprises Nicaragua’s Zelaya Central, Panama’s Plaza Amador, and Costa Rica’s Liga Deportiva Alajuelense.
The 501 Stars Academy are playing their match against subchampions Real Estelí on Sunday, August 14. Their second game is against AFFI Academia on Tuesday, August 16. In the final group match they take on Xelajú on Thursday, August 18.
The final games will be played on Saturday, August 20.
Guatemala’s Municipal won the 2019 championship beating Nicaragua’s Real Estelí 1-0 in the final at Choluteca in Honduras. Piratas of Honduras took third place edging Sporting San Miguelito of Panama 5-4 in a penalty kicks shootout.
Belize didn’t participate in that tournament.
