By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Belize Consulate in Florida is featuring Belizean-American, Nina Talamas as their star of the month of August.
Nina is a Physician Assistant (PA) from Miami, Florida. She was born in Miami to Belizean-born Mother, Marlena Talamas, and Miami-local, Wayne Talamas.
While Nina spent most of her life in Miami, Nina has always felt most at home in Belize.
In her early years, Nina grew up in Belize City and after moving back to Miami, she spent her summers in Caye Caulker.
Nina decided to pursue medicine because of her desire to help underserved populations. Coming from a family with a history in medical missions, it has long been her dream to return to her beloved Belize and provide medical care to those in need.
So, after graduating from Wake Forest School of Medicine in May 2022, her dream became a reality thanks to Dr. Pedro Arriaga who is a resident Primary Care Physician at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).
Nina has always had a passion for critical care. So, when Dr. Arriaga agreed to allow her to spend 4 weeks as a medical observer at KHMH, it was a perfect match.
During her time in the ICU, she has had the incredible opportunity to learn how critical care medicine is practiced in a limited-resource setting.
Nina observed how the doctors and nurses offer exceptional skill, compassion, and care to these patients, despite limitations in resources.
Most of all, this unique opportunity has afforded Nina the privilege to spend time with patients and their families, learning about the many individual needs of each patient.
Nina hopes to return to Belize as often as possible, after receiving more training in critical care at the University of Florida Shands Hospital, to donate her time and help locate funds for necessary medical equipment in order to support this vital service at the KHMH.
