By Rubén Morales Iglesias: FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura will be present for the launching of the ‘FIFA Football for Schools’ program by the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) on Monday.

Born in Senegal, Samoura had a long career at the United Nations before taking over as Secretary General of football’s world governing body.

“Ms Samoura has been able to make a difference to millions of people through her work in the UN, and stepped into her role at FIFA to help change the world through football as the first-ever female Secretary General of world football’s governing body,” says FIFA on its website.

Secretary General Samoura’s visit for the opening demonstrates how much this program means to FIFA, said the FFB’s Marketing and Communications Director Yashmin Juan. Samoura arrives in Belize on Sunday and leaves on Tuesday.

The Football Federation of Belize announced recently that it is kicking off the ‘FIFA Football For Schools’ (F4S) program with a three-day capacity building workshop for 45 teachers and coaches.

The 45 are divided into ten FFB coaches and 35 teachers from schools throughout the country. Incidentally, the teachers may apply the workshop hours towards the professional development component required by the Ministry of Education.

The workshop runs from August 15-17. The first two days of the course will be held at the Biltmore and the MCC Grounds in Belize City. On the third day, the F4S program will hold a football festival at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan in which 150 children from throughout the country will be involved.

“The Football for Schools aims to contribute to the education, development and empowerment of boys and girls around the country by incorporating football activities into physical education curriculums,” said the FFB.

FIFA says Football for Schools is “a programme where football meets education, inspiring children to learn life skills through fun football sessions”.

The course will be conducted by FIFA Football for Schools Project Leader Alexandre Gros and Football for Schools Technical Consultant Alberto Giacomini.

The Football For Schools program, which includes teacher training, also falls under the four-year Memorandum of Understanding the FFB signed with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and E-Governance and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology to lay the foundation for improving the level of football in Belize.

The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) seeks to teach football to 25,000 children in Belize’s schools within the next four years through the Football for Schools program.
