By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Prime Minister John Briceño said he remembered his playing days as he opened the Security Services Cup this week at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.

“It was a toss back to my own days of playing football when I made the kick-off opening the first Security Services Cup,” said Prime Minister Briceño who used to play as a goalkeeper for teams in Orange Walk starting with Muffles College, and the moving to Gonz, BDI, Sylvia’s, Leonie’s, Dills, BelVets, and All Orange Walk Selection.

“The initiative is focused on building confidence, camaraderie, trust, and of course sportsmanship as our security forces of Belize Police Department Belize Defence Force, and Belize Coast Guard play in healthy competition,” said the Prime Minister.

And the Prime Minister knows what he’s talking about. He is vouched for by one of Belize’s defenders ever, Gregsie Jones, better known as ‘Brickwall’, who played with him and coached him as well.

“I started defending him from Muffles College and then Sylvia’s, Leonie’s, Dills, OW Selections, up to the day I left in 84,” Jones told Omar Ayuso who contacted him for Breaking Belize News (BBN). Both are now living in the United States.

“I kept his position open even while he attended UT in Austin. He would come home on school break and jump right in the goal the same weekend he came in. Didn’t show a sign that he was away. Awesome, skillful, focused, and no-fear goalkeeper. Was rated with the best,” said Jones.

Prime Minister Briceño congratulated the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries and the Ministry of Defense for organizing this initiative.

“May the best team win!” he said.

The Security Services Cup features both men’s and women’s teams.

Incidentally, Gregsie Jones also told Ayuso a bit more about the teams the Prime Minister played for.

“Gonz, short for Gonzalez, was sponsored by the Gonzalez family owners of Maya Tortillas.

BDI (Belize Diversified Investments), owner Joe Loskot

Dills by Dill Aragon

BelVets by Salomon Constanza (former principal of Technical High)

Sylvia’s by Renan Briceño (named after his wife)

Leonie’s by the Chell family (Leonie’s Grocery)

and then he played many years as OW Selection goalkeeper.”
