By Benjamin Flowers: After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Belize Banana Festival is back.
The three-day event is scheduled for August 26-28 at the San Juan Village Football Field on Mile 35 Southern Highway, and is being held under the theme “Bananas! The bunch that builds the south.”
The festival is being hosted this year by the communities of San Juan and Cowpen and will feature the Ms. Banareia Pageant, live music, games, as well as the banana cook-off competition, among other events.
The organizing committee notes that the festival is being used to “highlight the history and benefits of the banana industry to Belize; create awareness of banana production and the nutritional and health benefits of bananas; highlight the Big Creek Port in Southern Belize; promote the utilization of under-utilized parts of bananas such as the peels, leaves, and pseudostem; and showcase other companies and businesses in Belize.”
The first Banana Festival was held back in 2018 and was followed up in 2019 with the second installment, but like most events, had to cancel in 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.
