By Benjamin Flowers</strong>: Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, offered his condolences this morning to the family of Derrick Uh, who died in police custody in Corozal this weekend.
Williams said that Uh was detained for being under the influence of alcohol while attending the Fiesta in San Joaquin Village, but the officers placed him in the back of the prison van because there is no police station in the village. He explained that the prison van is sealed and the engine needs to be running for a detainee in the van to have ventilation, but when the officers reached the Corozal police station they forgot to take Uh out of the van.
“Since then I have directed an internal and criminal investigation into the matter. Those officers who left the young man in the back of the vehicle will have to be dealt with some way or the other,” Williams said.
Williams also pledged that the Police Department will be transparent with the investigation ensuring all pertinent information is disclosed.
He also said that he may reach out to Uh’s family to offer condolences on behalf of the department and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
