Corozal Police allegedly “forgot” detainee inside van for half a day, leading to his death

Posted: Monday, August 15, 2022. 8:12 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Police in Corozal are being accused of committing a major blunder on Sunday, by apparently forgetting to remove a detainee from a prisoner van, thus leaving him to eventually die after more than 12 hours inside.

An official police report states that an officer who reported for duty and was assigned to refuel the prisoner van parked at the Corozal Police Station in the center of town noticed an odor apparently coming from the van just before three Sunday afternoon. He proceeded to a gas station near the outskirts of town but caught the odor again as he exited the vehicle.

A search found the body of Derrick Uh of Cristo Rey, Corozal, 20. Police say Uh was detained at the San Joaquin fair around 1 am on Sunday morning for reportedly grabbing a woman’s buttocks. When police transported him to the Corozal Police Station, it appears they forgot to take him out of the van. As a result, he died inside the vehicle.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on his body.
