#JusticeforDerrick: Family laments “heartless” police

Posted: Monday, August 15, 2022. 8:20 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The sister of detainee Derrick Uh, 20, now dead after allegedly being left in a prison van by police negligence for more than 12 hours, has said he was treated “worse than an animal” and called police in Corozal Town “heartless” for seemingly forgetting about him. She also revealed that he apparently took off his clothes to try to survive the sweltering heat inside the vehicle.

Describing him as “full of life,” in a social media post, the poster laments: “I know sometimes he was in problems but he just never did something that bad to deserve to be killed that way. If he did something wrong why they didn’t report he and just put him in jail and let us know. In fact, Police are supposed to protect us not to do this things.” (sic)

She further demanded justice, calling for police to “Stop killing our people” and even turning her ire on the alleged complainant, seeming to blame her in part for his death.

Police have opened an investigation and we expect further details in the course of the day.
