By Aaron Humes: Already there are rumors and reports that more could have happened – some believe, must have happened – to cause the death of 20-year-old Derrick Uh in Corozal Town on Sunday.
United Democratic Party Chairman and former Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte called on police to allow an independent investigation into what happened to Uh, and not to “micromanage” or prematurely ascribe a young man’s death to “a mistake.”
He also suggested that while Belize may ultimately need an independent body to conduct such investigations and to police the police, this investigation should involve assistance from foreign agencies such as the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Scotland Yard in London, or others.
He also called for a culture of change in a Department he characterized as demoralized and tired, led by a “trio without a clue” in Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa, CEO Kevin Arthurs and Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, all of whose resignations he again called for.
