By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, says that the Belize Police Department is bracing itself for a lawsuit after Corozal police officers left Derrick Uh in a prison van, causing his death.
Williams said Uh was placed in the van because there was no police station in San Joaquin Village, where he was detained, but that the officers did not take Uh out of the van when they got back to the station. Uh’s lifeless body was found on Sunday afternoon by the driver of the van who was doing scheduled maintenance to ensure its road readiness to transport prisoners on Monday morning.
“The family will have a right to sue and I am certain that they are going to sue, and we’re going to have to pay the price,” Williams said.
He went on record to say that it was unjustifiable for the officers to have left Uh in the van the way they did, which makes him certain that the lawsuit will be coming.
Uh was reportedly detained for being drunk and disorderly.
