By Aaron Humes: Heat stroke, the certified cause of the death of Derrick Uh according to a post-mortem examination, is, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the most serious heat-related illness.
“It occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature: the body’s temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down. When heat stroke occurs, the body temperature can rise to 106°Fahrenheit or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause permanent disability or death if the person does not receive emergency treatment,” the CDC website explains.
Symptoms of heat stroke include: confusion, altered mental status, slurred speech;
loss of consciousness (coma); hot, dry skin or profuse sweating; seizures; and very high body temperature.
Heat stroke can be fatal if treatment is delayed.
In the case of Derrick Uh, high temperatures on Sunday in the Corozal area would have been around 90 degrees Fahrenheit for most of the day as befitting its coastal location, with a higher heat index – meaning the temperature would have felt hotter to him – and high humidity typical for this time of year.
The CDC recommends potential treatments including ensuring that the patient was cooled down quickly, including using cold water, ice baths, or directly wetting the skin and/or clothing, and getting emergency medical treatment.
