By Rubén Morales Iglesias: 85 Belizean teachers are participating in a five-day ‘Food and Nutrition Education for Teachers’ (FNET) virtual training, according to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprises (MAFSE).
The Agriculture Ministry said the training is an activity the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprises, and the Ministry of Education, is carrying out along with the Mesoamerica Hunger Free AMEXCID-FAO Programme.
The virtual training is a joint initiative funded by the Government of Mexico through the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Brazil through the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program.
This evidence-based initiative was first implemented for the Caribbean countries in 2020 as an activity under the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program.
“The demonstration-based training approach will be based on an improved set of cultural aspects of Belize’s food security and nutrition context throughout the classes,” said MAFSE.
The FNET course for teachers promotes food systems transformation and aims to tackle hunger and malnutrition. It is expected it will contribute to sustainable school feeding programs.
The 85 teachers participating in the FNET training will gain credit hours towards professional development necessary for their teaching license renewal.
