By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Health experts around the world continue to monitor the spread of Monkeypox.
As of August 16, 2022, there were 38,019 confirmed or probable monkeypox cases identified in 93 countries, including 12,689 in the U.S.
Studies show that the virus can be transmitted in 3 ways, through direct contact with an infected person’s skin rash; by respiratory droplets spread when someone coughs or sneezes, and by touching contaminated surfaces or objects.
Experts say that most of the reported cases are among men who identify as gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with men.
However, monkeypox is not considered a sexually transmitted disease.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that health officials in all countries should be on the alert for signals related to people presenting with a rash that may be associated with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, back pain, and muscle aches.
