International News: El Salvador extends State of Emergency; 50,000 people arrested so far

Posted: Wednesday, August 17, 2022. 11:36 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Salvadoran Government has extended the countrywide State of Emergency, ABC reports.

The Salvadoran Government began its crackdown on gangs in late March and since then, 50,000 people have been arrested.

Despite criticism from civil society organizations, surveys show that Salvadorans agree with President Nayib Bukele’s measures.

However, many international organizations are calling on the Salvadoran government to respect the human rights and dignity of those being detained.

Before the vote on Tuesday, some protesters gathered outside the Legislative Assembly calling for an end to the state of emergency.

President Bukele requested extraordinary powers after gangs were blamed for 62 murders on March 26.

Bukele notes that the measures are finally allowing the country to deal with its “terrorists.”

Salvadorans have been relieved by the relative peace in the streets since the crackdown began.
