Ministry of Health and Wellness: 3 local samples test negative for Monkeypox; 4 other suspect cases being closely monitored

Posted: Wednesday, August 17, 2022. 6:14 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Earlier today the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) confirmed that the first three (3) samples of suspect Monkeypox cases that were sent abroad for testing came back negative.

The Ministry indicated that the testing is all part of “its enhanced surveillance of Monkeypox” that is being conducted by local and regional teams. Samples have also been taken from four (4) additional suspect cases that are being closely monitored. The results from these four (4) samples are expected shortly.

In a release sent out this evening, the Ministry reminded the public that “if you have a fever, feel tired and develop lesions (rash), to contact the nearest health facility as soon as possible”.

In order to reduce the transmission of both Monkeypox and COVID-19 public health measures such as handwashing, sanitizing, social distancing, wearing of masks while indoors and in crowded spaces are encouraged.

To date, almost 40,000 cases of Monkeypox have been confirmed in 93 countries.
