Verdes aiming for a win in Concacaf League on Wednesday night against Salvadoran champions Alianza in Belmopan

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: National football champions Verdes are aiming for a victory tonight over Salvadoran champions Alianza in the Scotiabank Concacaf League. The match is scheduled for 8:00 pm at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan.

Just recently Verdes advanced to the Round of 16 eliminating another Salvadoran club, Platense, on goal differential after drawing 0-0 in Belize and 2-2 in San Salvador.

Verdes are counting on their foreign players led by Mexican Edwin Villeda Bernal and Paraguayan Luis Ibarra who have been playing at a good level both in the Concacaf League and the Premier League of Belize (PLB). Villeda Bernal has been with Verdes for a number of seasons now and is the man who controls the ebb and flow of the Green Machine’s game. He managed a super goal and an assist in the games against Platense. Ibarra scored the other goal against Platense and has also nailed two in the PLB so far.

Mexican Cristian Ramírez Sánchez has also been playing up to par completing 94 percent of his passes according to Concacaf.

The Belize squad is also counting on the likes of Belizean forward Krisean Lopez to step up his game against Los Albos, as Alianza are also known. And they are certainly counting on Belizean goalkeeper Woodrow West to maintain his usual top-level game in goal.

The Salvadorans champs, who flew in on Tuesday as opposed to travelling by road as Platense did, are the favourites in the series and after Platense got dropped are expected to save face for Salvadoran football.

So, the stage is set for tonight.
