An enterprising Toledo teen robbed of his future – Wil Maheia and Belizeans in general outraged by brutal murder of young Leroy Cus in Belmopan

By Hugh O’Brien: On Wednesday night Breaking Belize News (BBN) received the sad report of the brutal stabbing of 18-year-old Leroy Cus in Belmopan. Our newsroom received initial reports that the young Toledo born Cus may have died on the spot but somehow we were hoping that the young man had survived the ordeal.

Police later confirmed that Cus was found dead on the central walkway, an area designed for pedestrians to walk in peace, an area that students from University of Belize and others traverse regularly, and an area that many of us older citizens can remember having fond memories walking alongside our classmates and friends. Coincidentally this area has become attractive for heartless thieves and others who take advantage of unsuspecting and innocent individuals.

Toledo activist Wil Maheia summarizes how most of us Belizeans feel about this senseless murder. “This hurts, it really hurts. This young man from remote Toledo left us here in Toledo not long ago to go up to the city to get an education. And now this.. my heart bleeds mien..hard working he was, believe in education, his family made sacrifices so that he could be up there in Belmopan the nation’s capital where this happen,” Maheia posted on social media.

Another post that all parents can relate to was a comment made on the BBN article by an avid reader “This is a gut wrenching heartache. Every parent worse nightmare. We want our kids to excel so we prepare them and send them out into the world to find their wings and gain independence not to get such news.”

“My sympathies to the family! where did this happen… less than a mile from the PM’s office less than a mile from the Police station, where is the protection for our people?…am so sad right now,” Maheia wrote.

While Maheia called “on every student in every school across this 8867 to hit the streets and demand justice and demand changes be made where it needs to be made.. too much non conviction in this country #crime is out of control adjustments must be made,” others offered their own recommendations. The call was made for more police patrols, for foot patrols, cameras placed in strategic locations and more lighting along the pedestrian walkways in the capital city, less classes at night, better bus transportation from our the University of Belize and other schools to the bus terminal, etc.

Eighteen year old Leroy Cus was an enterprising teen who worked as a graphic designer at Brodies. He was reportedly on his way home from work, walking in the area between St Ann Primary School and the Belmopan branch of James Brodie and Company Limited when he was brutally stabbed to death.

Worried family members, realizing that Leroy had not reached home from work by his usual time, went out looking for him after failing to reach him on his cell phone, and thereafter made the discovery of the body. He was said to have been holding two bank cards but nothing else was apparently found.

Leroy Cus was robbed of his life, robbed of his future and Belize was robbed of the contributions this young man was already doing to make Belize a better place.

Breaking Belize News joins in sending condolences to the family. Rest in Peace Leroy Cus!
