Belize rakes 2 gold, 4 bronze medals at North American Powerlifting Championships

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize raked two gold medals and four bronze medals at the North American Powerlifting Championships held in Panama City, Panama from Monday to Thursday.

Alida Wright Sharp gained gold in the Women’s Masters II 52 kg Category on Monday setting three new North American Records in squat, bench press, and total points, and tying the North American record for deadlift.

Robert Williams won Belize second gold in the Men’s Masters 1 Open 120 kg Category on Thursday.

“Belize is tiny yet powerful & we held our own against our gigantic neighbors. (Personally I loved Belize being on the podium next to Mexico, Canada & USA! Other countries now know Belize is a powerlifting contender & to not look past us!),” wrote Tom Sharp, Alida’s husband, on social media.

Edith Ruiz also won bronze in the Women’s Open 57 Kg Category on Monday. Jacqueline Alas earned a bronze in the Women’s Open 63 kg Category on Tuesday. Khalid Usher secured a third bronze on Wednesday in the Men’s Open 93 kg Category and on Thursday, William Murillo captured a fourth bronze in the Men’s Juniors 105 kg Category.

Belize’s other two representatives were also very competitive.

Leo Matura placed fourth in the 74 kg Men’s Open Category on Tuesday while Nerry Violet Sho secured the fifth spot in Women’s 76 kg.

Apart from an excellent overall performance, Sharp says the team selected by the Belize Powerlifting Association (BPA) also gained valuable international experience.

“The athletes also had responsibilities in assisting their teammates behind the scenes, from helping the teammate with equipment check, making weight prior to competing, loading plates on the bar during warm ups, running for water or needed equipment, & turning numbers in to the Secretary which inputs the weight of each attempt,” Sharp wrote.

“During powerlifting competition these weight amounts can be changed depending upon how the athlete & their competitor is performing. TeamBelize members gained valuable experience in International Competition, which only strengthens the team for future international championships. Kudos to Nerry Sho, Edith Ruiz, Jacqueline Alas, Leo Matura, William Murillo & Big Rob Williams for building a great bond & supporting their teammates. Melanie KC was just as much part of the handling team as the athletes were!

“A special shout out to Coaches Khalid Usher & Alida Wright Sharp who handled all the other athletes, even though they both were competing & winning medals themselves.”

Sharp said the BPA intends to send three women athletes to the World Powerlifting Championships to be held in Newfoundland, Canada in October.

Team Belize returns on Friday.
