By Aaron Humes: Four police officers – an Inspector, a Sergeant and two Constables – have been charged jointly with manslaughter in the death of Derrick Uh, 20, of Cristo Rey, Corozal District.
The four are accused of jointly causing the death by heat stroke of Uh, a detainee in their respective custody, on August 14, 2022, in Corozal Town.
Inspector Sanchez briefed the officers on activity at the San Joaquin village fairgrounds were Uh and another prisoner, later released, were detained earlier on Sunday. Sergeant Romero was the diarist who recorded Uh’s detention but did not see when the van left carrying him to Corozal Town – and to his death. Constable Alrick Borland was Sergeant Romero’s assistant and allegedly handed over the keys to Constable Peralta to transport it back to the station but allegedly failed to tell him about the men inside, though he said in a statement that both he and Peralta were present at Inspector Sanchez’s post-event debriefing. Constable Peralta, for his part, says he was never made aware of the presence of anyone inside the van before driving it to Corozal.
At least one of the accused, all on suspension, has retained legal counsel. The group is expected to appear in court in the coming hours.
