Former GSU police officer busted with 40 pounds of marijuana given new date to return to court

By Breaking Belize News Staff: An interdicted police officer who is a former member of the now renamed Gang Suppression Unit (GSU), was busted with 40 pounds of marijuana back in December of 2020; yesterday his trial was delayed again as his attorney requested an adjournment.

Thirty-seven-year-old Dion Bellini, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, represented by attorney Arthur Saldivar. He is answering for one count of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply to another.

The trial began last week, and the prosecution has already called two witnesses, one police officer, and one civilian.

Saldivar made a submission requesting notes of evidence since the first police officer, interdicted Police Constable, George Fraser already testified about a week ago and he feels that his evidence is very pertinent in the way forward in representing his client.

Chief Magistrate Fraser was very reluctant to grant the adjournment based on Saldivar’s request as she had hoped to conclude the case sooner than later but in the fairness to the accused, she granted an adjournment for next week Wednesday, August 23, 2022.

The prosecutors’ next witness in line to testify is another interdicted police officer, Nelson Middleton Jr., who is one of several police officers recently charged in a drug plane bust.

Notably, Bellini who is originally from Maya Mopan, Belmopan area, Cayo District, was found guilty and dismissed from the Belize Police Department after a tribunal hearing.

On Christmas Eve 2020, police found Bellini under a white jeep in a parking lot in Belize City. When officers searched the jeep, they found over 19 kilos of marijuana.
