By Aaron Humes: Inspector of Police Isaias Sanchez; Sergeant of Police Rosario Romero; and Constables Alrick Borland and Errol Peralta appeared on Thursday before the Corozal Magistrate’s Court, where they were each read a charge of manslaughter, an indictable offence.

The four are accused jointly of unlawfully, but not intentionally, causing the death of Cristo Rey, Corozal resident Derrick Uh, 20, on Sunday, August 14, by keeping him while in their custody pending a report of sexual assault, in a prison van in which he slowly suffocated to death as a result of heat stroke.

No plea was taken and after some argument bail of $10,000 each and two sureties was granted.

Attorney Norman Rodriguez, who represented Peralta, explained that while there was no objection to bail, he still had to make the case for it to the Magistrate: “The number one thing about bail is that you’re either a flight risk or you’re not, and the first thing that I submitted is that a man who is charged on the facts that he was unaware that there was somebody in the van; he cannot be blamed for that, so you have no reason to run and go anywhere. On top of that, he was gainfully employed and he spent ten years as a community policing officer, so he worked in the same community. Never been charged; never been convicted of anything, so he has no reason to run so he is not a flight risk and that is the primary thing the court has to consider.”

As part of their conditions to bail, they must surrender all travel documents and not apply for others or leave the country without the court’s permission, and sign in at their former workplace between 6 and 9 a.m. every Monday.

The case was adjourned to September 30, when the accused officers are to receive disclosure.

I thought I knew these officers but I do not seem able to spot PC Peralta.
