By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fifty-two Belizean students who have been awarded scholarships to study in Taiwan are, on Saturday, attending an orientation before leaving for Taiwan.

That’s a record number of scholarships awarded to Belizean students this year. Ten of those students are going to study in the health and medical fields.

“The Taiwan MOFA and ICDF Scholarship Program is one of the most attractive and highly regarded scholarship programs in Belize today. There is a great demand for these scholarships,” said the Minister of Education Francis Fonseca at the orientation ceremony at the Biltmore Plaza.

“On behalf of the Government of Belize and the Ministry of Education, I wish to place on record our deep gratitude, our thanks to the Government and People of the Republic of China – Taiwan.”

Minister Fonseca encouraged the students to take advantage of the great opportunity they have received.

““Please take full advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Remember at all times that you are representatives of Belize in Taiwan, Respect the people of Taiwan, respect their culture. Embrace the opportunity to learn a new language.

“Explore the beautiful country of Taiwan. Make new friends, so don’t just hang out with Belizeans. Make new friends, make new friends in Taiwan,” he encouraged them.

The orientation is being conducted by the Embassy of Taiwan and the Belize Taiwan Alumni Society.

Thirty-eight of the students received scholarships from the Taiwan Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and 14 were granted scholarships by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). The MOFA scholarship awardees will study in Mandarin and the ICDF awardees at English instruction universities.

During the orientation ceremony, the students were also addressed by the Governor General Dame Froyla Tzalam, the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceño, the Taiwan Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien.

The Taiwan-bound students also received alumni remarks from the CEO in the Ministry of Immigration Dr Gilroy Middleton and CEO in the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate, Change, and Disaster Management Dr Kenrick Williams.

Scholarship student Siyah Ayun Swasey gave the vote of thanks.
