By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After three years of not having any indigenous malaria cases, Belize is to be certified as a malaria-free country later this year, but that doesn’t mean that the country can just take it easy.
In fact, it has to be well prepared and if a case or cases surface, the country’s health system needs to be able to respond immediately and appropriately.
PAHO Caribbean said that for the elimination and post-elimination phases, “it is critical that microscopists maintain a high level of competency and that policies and procedures are set in place to ensure the accurate diagnosis of the disease”.
With that in mind, PAHO/WHO Belize and the Ministry of Health & Wellness recently conducted a two-week training workshop with microscopists in the health regions.
“PAHO/WHO provided technical guidance and finalization of the Standard Operating Procedures for malaria diagnosis to ensure the early detection of cases and reduce the risk of disease transmission while sustaining capacities for prevention of re-establishment.
Belize has reported zero indigenous cases for the last three consecutive years and the intention is to keep it that way.
