By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “The Taiwan MOFA and ICDF Scholarship Program is one of the most attractive and highly regarded scholarship programs in the Belize today. There is a great demand for these scholarships,” said Minister of Education Francis Fonseca on Friday morning at the orientation ceremony for 52 Belizean students who were awarded academic scholarships by the Government of Taiwan.

“On behalf of the Government of Belize and the Ministry of Education, I wish to place on record our deep gratitude, our thanks to the Government and People of the Republic of China – Taiwan for their steadfast and unwavering commitment to the growth and development of Belize through meaningful investments in our people, meaningful investments in education,” said Minister Fonseca.

“This program is a great example of the strong, dynamic, mutually beneficial relationship that Belize and Taiwan enjoy.”

Minister Fonseca also acknowledged that Taiwan is also supporting Belize’s ongoing Connect Education Project which seeks to expand reliable internet services for schools countrywide.

Thirty-eight students received scholarships from the Taiwan Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF) and 14 were granted scholarships by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

The students gathered on Friday morning at the Belize Biltmore Plaza for an orientation prior to their leaving for Taiwan soon.

“We’re very proud of the hundreds of Belizeans who have received a world class education in Taiwan,” Fonseca said as he encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunity afforded to them.

“Our scholarship recipients today will join an elite group,” he pointed out.

“Congratulations to each of you and your families for receiving this wonderful scholarship opportunity,” the Education Minister said.

“As others have said to you, please take full advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Remember at all times that you are representatives of Belize in Taiwan. Respect the people of Taiwan, respect their culture. Embrace the opportunity to learn a new language, to learn, as the Special Envoy said, about a new culture, new foods and also new drinks.

“Explore the beautiful country of Taiwan. Make new friends, so don’t just hang out with Belizeans. Make new friends, make new friends in Taiwan.”

Minister Fonseca also told them that they will have the support of the Belize Students Association and the Belize Embassy in Taiwan.

“There’s a great Belize Student Association. We met them when we were in Taiwan earlier this year. A great association waiting to meet you and support you in every way,” he said.

“Belize’s Embassy in Taiwan, as you saw, represented by her Excellency, Ambassador Candice Pitts, is also there to support you and to assist you on this new journey.”

In closing, Minister Fonseca told the students who will soon leave to Taiwan to work hard.

“Work hard stay focused and enjoy your time in Taiwan,” he said.
