Ladyville businessman drowned checking depth of water at Gales Point

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Forty-six-year-old businessman Benigno Betancourt drowned in Gales Point village yesterday, during a family outing.

Police say that Betancourt was with his family and decided to go canoeing when he jumped into the water to check its depth but did not resurface.

Family members began jumping into the water to search for him, but their efforts were fruitless. Betancourt’s lifeless body was recovered around 4:22 p.m.

Those who made the discovery administered CPR in an attempt to revive him but to no avail.

His body was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital where it was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police are investigating.
