By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 54-year-old Belize City man received a five-month prison sentence for stealing a number of items out of a police vehicle.
John Hoy appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with a single count of theft.
Allegations against him are that, on August 17, he stole a fire extinguisher, phone charger, and a radio battery (over $1,000 in total value), from a vehicle belonging to the Special Branch of the Belize Police Department.
In court, Hoy, who has a series of convictions for crimes of dishonesty, pleaded for mercy because of his age and telling the Magistrate that he was ready to change his life.
Taking into consideration his previous crimes, and the fact that he owes the court $590 in unpaid fines for previous convictions, the Magistrate decided to sentence him to five months in jail.
