OAS Secretary General arrives in Belize

By Benjamin Flowers: The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), H. E. Luis Almagro is in Belize.

Almagro arrived in Belize via the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA) today, greeted by Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration, Amalia Mai.

After his arrival, Almagro met with Prime Minister John Briceño, Foreign Minister Eamon Courtenay, and other Government Officials.

During his visit, Almagro will also be visiting the Adjacency Zone. His last visit to Belize was back in 2017 when he visited both Belize and Guatemala.

The OAS has been an overseeing body between Belize and Guatemala since 2000, when the Adjacency Zone was established through the confidence building measures.

The Adjacency zone continues to operate despite issues with its funding as was reported in 2018.

The dispute between Belize and Guatemala is currently being heard by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
