By Aaron Humes: A husband-and-wife team of American missionaries in Santa Elena Town, Cayo District, were targeted overnight by armed burglars who fortunately managed not to get away with anything.
The wife told police that she was upstairs in their home around 11:40 p.m. when she heard a bang on the front glass door. She went to check to see if it was her husband but was surprised by a masked man with a scarf over his head, who held her in place in their room.
She said she heard her husband downstairs yelling, “Don’t kill me,” followed by a single gunshot. The man holding her let her go and ran downstairs. She went to check on her husband who fortunately was fine and he said he was responding to the same noise when a man grabbed him and demanded money with a gun pointed at his head.
According to the husband, he told the burglar that he does not keep money at the house, prompting the burglar to fire a shot at the floor in the kitchen where the husband was being held, hitting the carpet but not injuring anyone. Both men fled without getting anything from the house.
Police have detained one person for questioning as part of their investigations.
