Government to ask House of Representatives for $12 million for emergency road repairs following flooding

Posted: Monday, August 22, 2022. 12:17 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Supplemental appropriations of $12 million will go to the House of Representatives for emergency road repairs stemming from last week’s flooding event in northern and Central Belize following the passage of a tropical wave.

According to a report presented to Cabinet on the recent tropical wave that passed over Belize between 17th and 18th August, it “caused significant flooding which resulted in damage to the country’s national highways and primary feeder roads, causing damages in the millions of dollars.”

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing has been kept busy with repairs to two caved-in sections of the Philip Goldson Highway at miles 24 and 31 respectively.

Cabinet discussed and gave support for the supplemental appropriations to cover the cost of these emergency repairs.
