By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Friday, Mexican officials arrested a top prosecutor in its first high-level arrest in the notorious 2014 disappearance of 43 students, Reuters report.
Authorities detained Former Attorney General Jesus Murillo on charges of forced disappearance, torture, and obstruction of justice in the abduction and disappearance of the student-teachers in Guerrero.
Within hours of the arrest, authorities received 83 more arrest orders, for soldiers, police, Guerrero officials, and gang members – in relation to the case, the attorney general’s office said.
Murillo oversaw the highly criticized investigation into the Sept. 26, 2014, disappearance of the students from the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers’ College.
Many international experts criticized the official investigation as riddled with errors and abuses, including the torture of witnesses.
Meanwhile, human rights official, Alejandro Encinas referred to the disappearances as a “state crime” with involvement from local, state, and federal officials.
“What happened? A forced disappearance of the boys that night by government authorities and criminal groups,” Encinas said.
Attorneys for the victims’ families urged the Mexican government to make more arrests.
