International News: Pope calls for open dialogue following Bishop’s arrest in Nicaragua

Posted: Monday, August 22, 2022. 9:40 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Sunday, Pope Francis called for an open dialogue to resolve the situation between the church and the Nicaraguan Government, Reuters report.

Earlier this month, the Nicaraguan Government began its crackdown on critics of its administration with closures of 7 Catholic radio stations and the investigation of a Roman Catholic Bishop.

The Nicaraguan police said they are investigating Bishop Rolando Alvarez, head of the Matagalpa diocese.

The Bishop has been an outspoken critic of the government of President Daniel Ortega.

Pope Francis says that he is following the situation in Nicaragua “with worry and pain” and asked for prayers for the country.

“I would like to express my conviction and my wish that, through an open and sincere dialogue, the foundations for a respectful and peaceful coexistence can be found,” the Pontiff said.

The United Nations has expressed concern over the raid and the Organization of American States has also condemned it.
