Peyrefitte: UDP National Party Council agrees to stop infighting, remove all offensive social media posts

Posted: Monday, August 22, 2022. 6:18 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The United Democratic Party’s National Party Council (UDP-NPC) met on Saturday last and agreed to stop the infighting in the ranks of the Opposition, and to remove all offensive posts from social media, according to UDP Chairman Michael Peyrefitte during a press conference earlier today.

“We all agreed, pursuant to the constitution of the Party, that the attacks on each [other] will stop and that we will move forward having a united party, notwithstanding the fact that we are proud to embrace our democracy of the UDP. So, we move forward,” said Peyrefitte.

“We have one true enemy. That’s the PUP, it’s not each other. We all agree that the members of the party will support each other, abide by the constitution, and move forward. Hopefully, what happened Saturday is the start of a new journey to see the UDP be back fighting fit and we move on.”

Peyrefitte did not want to say what sanctions will happen to those that do not comply, though he said the NPC, which is the second authority in the UDP behind the National Convention, made it very clear that the NPC decision must be followed.

“If any member of the party chooses to not respect the authority of the NPC, well, I’m sure the NPC would respond to that in due time … People who want to be a part of the UDP will accept that the NPC is the second highest authority in the country, and they will comply. I mean, the constitution of the party to which we swear or have sworn says exactly what was in the resolution, so it shouldn’t be difficult. But let’s see what happens. We will cross that bridge when we get there,” the UDP Chairman said.

Peyrefitte said that people who do not want to comply with the NPC directive, as far as he is concerned, have already made their own decision, stating that no one is above the party.

“Saturday, we made a very clear resolution and you either choose to comply with the resolution or you won’t. And I surely hope and expect that everybody will,” he said.

When told that Patrick Faber had not removed posts knocking the party leader and reposted posts by Delroy Cutkelvin, Peyrefitte said that he is in contravention of the NPC’s decision.

“If it is still up and he is still promoting and he is spreading that, then in my view, he is clearly violating the ruling of the NPC on Saturday and the NPC will have its say on that. The NPC will decide what it wants to do to anybody who decides that they are bigger than the NPC. I don’t know if the posts are up. I don’t have social media but I’m sure evidence will be brought to the NPC of that by people who have social media,” said Peyrefitte.

“The NPC made it very clear that anyone who thinks that they are bigger than the NPC, well, they have to face the NPC.”

Peyrefitte said that his timeline starts as of the NPC meeting on Saturday.

“The critical part as to whether we go in a certain direction, that journey started two days ago after having the National Party Council, the first physical one we had in terms of being physically in presence of each other in a couple [of] years due to the pandemic,” said Peyrefitte.

“Saturday, we turned a new leaf,” said Peyrefitte.

But if that will mean party unity for the Opposition, we must go by what Peyrefitte said: “Let’s see what happens.”
