By Benjamin Flowers: Ladyville businessman 46-year-old Benigno Betancourt, drowned over the weekend in the village of Gales Point Manatee, but his relatives might have to wait a while longer to get some answers from the post-mortem examination, the Belize Police Department says.
Head of communications of the Office of the Commissioner of Police ASP Fitzroy Yearwood explained today, that police could not give a definitive time on when the post-mortem would be conducted, due to the volume of work the pathologist has.
“We know that there are several post-mortems lined up ahead of Mr. Betancourt, but I’m certain that as soon as the doctor performs that examination, the findings will be made public…” Yearwood said.
Betancourt’s family told police that he was on a family trip and took several relatives out canoeing. They said that he jumped out of the canoe to test the depth of the water and went straight down, never resurfacing.
After a minute they realized something was wrong, other family members began jumping into the lagoon to look for him, but he was not found until it was too late.
