Secretary-General of OAS visits Belize, says “important work” in border area must continue

By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: Prime Minister of Belize John Briceno is hosting Secretary-general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, on his second visit to Belize.

The Secretary-general reiterated the OAS’ commitment along with the “Friends of Belize” to continuing the “important work” in the Adjacency Zone with Guatemala, which has seen reduced confrontation and incursion in recent months.

The Secretary-general also paid tribute to Belize’s growth as a regional voice, with Belizeans like Dr Carla Barnett (CARICOM Secretary-general) and Nestor Mendez (OAS Assistant Secretary-general) taking up prominent roles in the International arena. Belize’s brand of diplomacy, economic and political development, as seen in the recently started amnesty program for settled immigrants for example, he said, is worth fighting for.
