By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “The Prime Mini … the Minister of Finance’s family is heavily invested in gas stations. They are the only ones making the money. The people are not getting a break,” said United Democratic Party (UDP) Chairman Michael Peyrefitte explaining the intention to protest high gas prices in front of the Shell gas station at the western entrance of Belize City on Tuesday.
“The Minister of finance has the Choice to reduce the excise tax, if you will, on the fuel.”
Despite not receiving the required police permit, the opposition United Democratic (UDP) are going ahead with the protest because gas prices have not moved downward for months.
“We choose to protest in front of a gas station, partly, you have to admit, for the irony and the optics of it. We’re talking about so many months, days, weeks that the price of fuel on the world market has been falling and yet we cannot get a lowered price on fuel when that is something that in many ways literally flies the economy.
Peyrefitte said that his party has been getting calls to send a message by way of a protest … to indicate that the population is not happy with the People’s United Party.
“We want to demonstrate in front of a gas station because that is a pertinent issue,’ he said.
“We want to demonstrate that that gas station represents, along with the high class of fuel, the high cost of living for people in this country. And those are just two of the myriad things that we’ll be protesting against. I think we need to add to our list that we are protesting the fact that we can’t even get permission to do a legitimate protest.”
