By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “I don’t know how many people will be out there, I don’t know how many will come, I know I will be there, so that’s one,” said United Democratic Party chairman Michael Peyrefitte at a virtual conference answering a question about how organized the UDP’s planning of the protest on Tuesday in Belize City is.
“If it’s just me, well it’s just me,” said Peyrefitte.
And as Peyrefitte talked it appeared that the UDP doesn’t really know how strong or weak they are and are doing this protest to gauge where they stand at the moment. Peyrefitte called on people to protest if they feel things are not good.
“We’re not the PUP, we don’t pay people to protest. We come out and protest because that’s what you feel is your genuine feeling. If you believe the price of fuel is fair, if you believe that the cost of living is as low as it can be, if you believe that this government is doing the best that it could possibly do, then stay home and be happy,” Peyrefitte said.
“If you don’t believe any of that, then come out and send a message. The word ‘protest’ is not bad. We’re not talking about disrupting the business of that gas station. We’re not talking about disrupting the movement of traffic. We’re talking about just having our voices be heard.
And again, Peyrefitte reiterated that he didn’t know how many people would support the UDP’s move but that he would be there.
“We’re calling for this to happen, we’re calling for voices to be heard and for people to put on record at this satisfaction with this maladministration. We don’t know how many people will come. I know I will be there, so that’s one,” Peyrefitte said.
So, the question is: will the UDP have its people support on Tuesday?
“And if it’s just me, then it’s just me, I’ll be happy with that, but time will tell. Come out tomorrow and you’ll see,” Peyrefitte said.
The UDP said on social media that the protesters will leave from the UDP Headquarters at 9:00 am and head to the Shell gas station at Western entrance to Belize City where the protest is planned to occur.
