International News: China sees decline in births and marriages due to COVID-19

Posted: Tuesday, August 23, 2022. 11:53 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: China’s National Health Commission said that the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the decline in the country’s marriage and birth rates, CNBC reports.

The National Health Commission said that women are delaying plans to marry and have children and that rapid economic and social developments have led to “profound changes.”

In addition, it noted that more time is being spent on education and high-pressure working environments also played a part.

“The coronavirus has also had a clear impact on the marriage and childbirth arrangements of some people,” the commission said.

Analysts say that new births in China could fall to a record low this year.

In 2021, China had a fertility rate of 1.16, one of the lowest rates in the world.

The country has acknowledged that its population is shrinking after having imposed a one-child policy from 1980 to 2015.

Authorities have since introduced tax breaks, longer maternity leave, enhanced medical insurance, housing subsidies and extra money for a third child.
