Alianza cut Verdes’ dream of advancing, routing them 5-1 in San Salvador in Scotiabank Concacaf League Round of 16

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Salvadoran champions Alianza routed Verdes 5-1 in El Salvador, cutting Verdes’ dream of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Scotiabank Concacaf League.

Victor Landazuri started the onslaught in the 11’ giving the home-side the lead at the Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador.

An unintentional handball by Aaron Lopez gave Alianza a gift penalty kick and their captain Rodolfo Zelaya converted in the 19’ for the 2-0 lead.

Marvin Monterroza converted the third Albos goal in the 50’ with a power shot that left goalkeeper Woodrow West standing.

Verdes cut one short on a 54’ minute goal by Krisean Lopez in response to Alianza’s third goal to make it 1-3. Lopez made a solo run against a defender and nailed goalkeeper Mario González with a low shot from left to right to the far post.

Alianza got another gift in the 64’ when Elías Rivas ran into a rebound when keeper Woodrow West tried to clear a ball sent backward by a teammate. The ball hit Rivas on his left elbow and sailed into the net. It should have been ruled and handball.

Alianza ripped the net in the 84’ but the referee ruled it off due to a foul.

But Alianza were not to be denied, and Emerson Mauricio shot past a defender into the net that very same minute for the 5-1 lead.

So much for the effort by the Belizean champions. They lost the match 1-5 and the series 1-7 on aggregate after losing 0-2 last week in Belmopan.

Now, they return home on Thursday and start working for next year all over again.

That’s how it is.
