Belmopan City Council Under 10 Mini World Cup Football Tournament ends with Camalote Invasion Boys taking the championship

By Benjamin Flowers: The Under 10 Mini World Cup Football Tournament hosted by the Belmopan City Council came to a close over the weekend, with Camalote Invasion Boys (Team France) emerging as the champions.

The tournament, which was a five-week endeavor, had a total of 112 children between the ages of 8 and 10 years old participating. Games were set up in a 7 v 7 format (6 players plus one goalkeeper) and played at the Mae Gordon Park. The participating football clubs were asked to submit names of actual World Cup teams to be represented in the tournament.

The participating clubs were Medina’s FC – Mexico; Motete Babaguti FA (A) – Canada; Armenia FC – Spin; Camalote Invasion Girls – Portugal; Mayamopan United FC – Colombia; Young Starz – Brazil; and Motete Babaguti FA (B) – Italy.

“Throughout the tournament, we saw excellent sportsmanship, discipline, and perseverance demonstrated by all these teams and we are proud of each and every one of them. We must congratulate Team France, who are this year’s Champions 2022,” the Belmopan City Council said.

Mystery Furtado, one of the organizers, told Breaking Belize News that the tournament was done in collaboration with the business community of Belmopan City, with as many as 17 sponsors chipping in to make it a success.

“What we did because we wanted it to be more meaningful and have a true sense of community, instead of relying on one entity…we went around asking them to sponsor one team. That involved getting the jerseys and putting their logo on the jerseys. So each team that participated had a different logo on their jerseys,” Furtado said.
