House meets to discuss latest appropriations, BISL settlement, business-related bills

By Aaron Humes: Intrigue surrounds this morning’s special meeting of the House of Representatives in Belmopan.

With a veto-proof majority, supplementaries for an estimated $12 million for emergency road repairs following the recent flooding caused by the August 17/18 tropical wave and the BISL settlement agreement for $76 million top the agenda and are expected to pass.

The House will also consider second readings for the Trade Marks (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Accommodation Tax (Remission of Arrears) Bill, 2022; and the Digital Government Bill, 2022, per the official orders of the day.

The Assembly barricades are up following reports of protests outside the National Assembly over gas prices and the cost of living, instigated by the Opposition United Democratic Party.

However, the UDP itself is fractured and all eyes will be on that side of the House to observe the interactions between Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow and Tracey Taegar-Panton and Patrick Faber, should either or both choose to appear.
