“One-day” payment ignores domestic realities, says Tracey Taegar-Panton of BISL deal

By Aaron Humes: A lot could be done with the US$38.5 million settlement for Belize International Services Limited, according to Albert area representative Tracey Taegar-Panton.

We could lower gas prices, assist communities, resolve crime, provide food to marginalized families, and much more.

She also pointed out that we could have negotiated a payment plan on the deal. She suggested that we could further revise the payment scheme, calling it a “very heavy burden to ask the Belizean people to pay” at a time when the cost of living and fuel prices remain high.

The Prime Minister had to clarify that the Courtenay Coye firm, which argued the earlier case in court, had nothing to do with the subsequent settlement. Taegar-Panton had questioned who are the skilled evaluators that calculated the final settlement and shepherded the matter to the current pass.
